Takeover sets AMG up for a strong year
The oldest privately-owned building contractor in Wolverhampton has continued to be buoyant in the face of wider fears of Brexit.
Now Arthur M Griffiths & Son in Wolverhampton has expanded again with the acquisition of Stanford Construction, building contractors in Pensnett.
AMG Group’s future order book rose by about £10m from this time last year to nearer £30m at the start of the financial year. Based on historical performance, this should mean the company will achieve a record turnover of around £38 million for the forthcoming year, on the back of last year’s rise of about £8 million. It suggests good news for the Black Country construction industry which is reeling from the recent demise of contractors Shaylor Group and IB Construction.
AMG only undertakes projects within a 50 mile radius of its Wolverhampton base, which it has occupied for more than 120 years. Managing director Richard Green said “As 90 per cent of our staff and supply chain are all Black Country based this really does mean that we are making sure
the Black Country pound is being spent in the Black Country where it should be.”
Now it has taken over Stanford Construction, a company born from the ashes of the demise of Chase Norton Construction Ltd in 2008. Two of the Chase Norton directors – Nigel Turner and Bob Gee – founded Stanford in July 2008. In 2013 Bob Gee decided to retire, which left Mr Turner to continue on his own until September 2019, when Nigel also decided it was time to retire.
Nigel opened discussion with long term industry colleague Richard Green, managing director of Arthur M Griffiths & Son Ltd, based in Wolverhampton. Having grown considerably themselves
in the previous six years, Richard and the directors of the AMG Group knew of Stanford’s approach. They saw the potential of an acquisition that would allow AMG to provide a
complete construction service, allowing the company to work on construction projects that are of a lower value. Stanford Construction has effectively become a Special Projects Company
within the AMG group to target contracts worth between £20,000 and £1 million, while Arthur M Griffiths & Son Ltd concentrates on contracts worth between £1 million and £10 million.
Mr Green also commented that this was much needed good news amid Brexit uncertainty. “Everyone I speak to either in business or socially are getting thoroughly exasperated with it all and it is now really starting to affect how people view their immediate futures,” he said. “We need some positivity and confidence to think beyond the Brexit issue and remove some of the frustration and negativity that seems to be enveloping the country at the moment, our own success story hopefully demonstrates there is good news out there.”
